The 9 Best Electric Bike Conversion Kit Reviews – [2020]

Building your Electric bike may seem like hard and complicated work…

It is way easier than you might think;

The best electric bike conversion kit comes with all parts included and is very easy to install. In this comprehensive guide, we will list the best electric bike conversion kits available and how to install them.

It is Cheaper Motorizing a Bicycle than Buying an Ebike

ebike kit mountain bikeIt is not as difficult and time-consuming as people think to build your very own electric bike. Ebike kits today have all parts included and come with an instructions manual.

What can be a bit time-consuming, though, is all the research and planning that goes into finding the best electric bike conversion kit. And that is what we will be going over together in this article along with the best electric bike conversion kits we can find for you.

There are considerable advantages to building your own Electric bike;

  • Buying electric bike conversion kits directly from the manufacturers – Skipping the middlemen cuts down on the cost
  • You don’t have to buy the bike – Assuming you already own one
  • Greater variety of parts – You can choose how powerful motor or how long range you want with an ebike kit
  • It is easier finding replacement parts –  Since the parts are not unique to a specific brand you can easily find replacement parts or later on upgrade certain parts
  • Higher speed – When riding between 20-30 mph you should wear a proper Ebike Helmet
  • Bragging rights – Many people will be impressed and curious about how you managed to build an ebike all on your own

So many of the benefits are about cost-efficiency. Even if you don’t have a bike already, you can get a used one of your liking for a small amount.

Choosing which Bicycle to Motorize

If you already have a bike, that’s great, but you should make sure it is suitable for the amount of power you will be mounting on it.

Don’t worry, most bikes are, the an essential factor to look for is how sturdy the frame is. It has to be sturdy enough to not bend over time with a powerful motor mounted on it.

A sturdy frame  is not expensive at all. The cheapest bikes usually have steel frames, more expensive ones probably have aluminum frames. The ones to be careful about are the costly carbon fiber frames. If you have one of those, you have to be a little bit more cautious about which type of ebike kit you install.

A front-wheel hub motor is putting the most pressure on the frame (front fork), a mid-drive or rear-wheel enigne is preferable if you have a light but weak carbon fiber frame.

To summarize this;

  • A sturdy steel frame – You can choose any kit you want.
  • A suitable aluminum frame – You can choose any kit you want but beware not to get a too powerful one if you choose a front wheel hub motor (750-1500W). It might damage the front fork mounting slot over time and cause the wheel to fall off. To avoid this, you can get a torque arm as support.
  • An expensive and light carbon fiber frame – You can choose a mid-drive or rear wheel kit. If you select a powerful rear-wheel ebike kit, make sure the rear wheel is well supported by the frame so it won’t bend.

Choosing the Best Electric Bike Conversion Kit

Ebike in the snowWhen choosing the best electric bike conversion kit, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Some are easier than others to install, but all have different advantages and disadvantages.

A front wheel conversion kit is the easiest one to install. As long as you have a sturdy front fork, there is no need to worry.

  • Easy to install – Anyone can follow the instructions.
  • Low cost – The best electric bike kit if your wallet gets to decide.
  • Fits most bikes – Most bikes have a standard mount size. If it is a bit too narrow, you can often bend it in with a little force.
  • Shorter wiring – Most wires go from the front wheel to the handlebar. Don’t forget to fasten the cables to the frame.
  • Can lose traction when it is slippery – There is not as much weight on the front as on the rear wheel.
  • Can damage the front fork drop-out slot – Won’t be a problem if you either have a sturdy front fork or choose a 500W motor or less. You can also get a torque arm to support the front fork.

A rear-wheel conversion kit puts less pressure on the frame and is still relatively simple to install.

  • Easy to install – Anyone can follow the instructions.
  • Low cost – The best electric bike kit if your wallet gets to decide.
  • Excellent traction – When the motor is at the rear it becomes a bit back heavy and gets better traction
  • Better handling – Rear wheel drive gives you more stability and a smoother ride
  • Fits most bikes – Make sure the bike’s mount size matches the Ebike kit.
  • Steadily mounted – A rear hub motor has excellent support from the frame.
  • Can be a bit difficult to mount the gears – It can be hard to fit all the gears in place afterinstalling the hub motor.
  • Longer wiring – Fasten your wires with zip ties or an equivalent neatly to the frame.
  • A powerful motor may lift the front – Only a really powerful electric motor and a back-heavy bike can do a wheelie

A mid-drive conversion kit is probably the best but also most challenging to install.

  • Excellent traction – The motor drives the chain and back wheel where most of the weight is
  • Better handling – Rear-wheel drive feels more smooth and more comfortable to handle
  • Steadily mounted – The frame supports the motor well
  • More effective motor – It uses the existing gears of the bike for power efficiency
  • Low gravity – Low gravity gives you better handling and balance
  • Does not fit all bikes – Make sure the measurements are correct for the attachment point
  • More wear on the chain and gears – As it is using the existing chain and sprockets for efficiency there is also more wear to them
  • Susceptible to damages from gravel and curbs – As the motor sits underneath the bike, it can get hit by rocks flying up or high curbs
  • Expensive – Cost a bit more than a hub-motor but truly is the best electric bike kit out there

There are other electric motor types such as Friction-drive, Internal motors, and All wheel drive motors. The ones above are the most common and indeed the best motor types for this purpose.

Front Wheel – The Best Electric Bike Conversion Kit

These are the best front-wheel electric bike conversion kits available right now.

As you can see, I have mostly chosen powerful ebike kits because there is not a big difference in price. You should get as much quality and electrical power as possible from the money you spend.

There are also less powerful ebike kits on this list. If your only goal is commuting or cruising, a less powerful electric bike kit will do just fine.

Ebikeling 1200w E-bike kit

Ebikeling is based in Illinois and provides quality products for a low price. This one is their most powerful electric bike conversion kit that is super easy to install.

You can modify this kit and choose between LED or LCD as well as thumb or twist throttle. Since they are an American company, they are easy to reach on the telephone for support or warranty issues.

It runs on a 48-volt battery, but some people have bought the 52-volt battery for even more power and speed. The battery needs to be bought separately. (A 52 V battery is not recommended by the manufacturer)

Pinty 1000w E-bike kit

Pinty is an excellent and very affordable electric bike kit.

The FT2000 model includes everything you need to convert your bike (except the battery) quickly. On Amazon, they suggest a recommended battery; however, I would not buy that battery (there are better options).

The battery Amazon recommends is a lead-acid battery. I would buy a Li-ion ebike battery with a lockable case for both safety and convenience.

If you buy this electric bike conversion kit, be sure to order a torque arm as well.

Rear Wheel – The Best Electric Bike Conversion Kit

The rear wheel electric bike conversion kit is better when aiming for the most power and is still easy to install.

Having the motor on the rear end of the bike gives you a lot better traction and handling. This is necessary when pushing the limit and going as fast as possible, especially if you ride a bike trail or a bit of dirt road.

You won’t need a torque arm since the bike’s frame is stronger in the rear mounting slot. It is both safer and more fun.

AW 1000w Ebike Kit

AW has grown into one of the best well-known retailers in the world of electric bike kits. They have so sold so many electric bike conversion kits and therefore a lot of reviews on Amazon.

This Ebike kit is one of the few that actually come with a tire on the wheel. It is nice not having to change from the old tire.

I can not recommend the lead-acid battery you are suggested when buying this ebike kit. You should go for a Li-Ion battery with an excellent range to get the full capacity out of the motor.

Many people have gone with a 52 volt battery with great success for even more power. I have not tested this but, it is an exciting idea. (Not recommended by the manufacturer)

Mid-Drive – The Best Electric Bike Conversion Kit

A mid-drive is the best electric bike conversion kit there is and gives you the best performance and speed.

As for the motor quality, a mid-drive ebike kit is your best option. There is however a lot more moving parts, so there is some wear on your chain and gears.

It might be more challenging to install, and the research beforehand needs to be made carefully, so the mounting slots match those on your bike. When this gets done properly, you certainly get the best electric bike conversion kit available for the money you spend.

This is not for the inexperienced, though. You need to have done some tinkering with bikes before attempting this. It also helps a lot if you have a bike stand and some standard bike tools.

Since the mid-drive uses your pre-existing gears, you don’t need as much power as a gearless hub-motor does. That also makes the top speed a result of how big sprockets you use.

If you feel you have the experience, then there is no choice, you need to get yourself a mid-drive kit.

Bafang BBSHD/BBS03 1000w (battery included)

Bafang has, in recent years, grown in to a well-known brand. The name Bafang is now a synonym to a mid-drive ebike kit, kind of like Google is to search engines.

In this package, you are supplied with the needed bolts and nuts to fit it to your bike. You also get brake levers, speedometer and an LCD-display among other things.

The Battery-pack included in this kit consists of proper 18650 Samsung high discharge cells. It rated for 48 volts and 17.5 Ah, the battery case is fitted to a bracket you mount on your frame.

It is not easy to choose the best electric bike conversion kit between the ones that are listed, but I am sure you will find one that is perfect for you.

When buying an Ebike kit the saying “you get what you pay for” is undoubtedly true, especially when choosing between batteries.

There are many types of batteries that are cheap, but they will not serve you well in the long run. A good Li-Ion battery in a waterproof and easily accessible casing is hard to beat.

Depending on your technical knowledge and experience with bikes I am sure you will find it easy installing the kit you have chosen.

I hope you have found this guide about the best electric bike conversion kit helpful, and that you will enjoy your new electric bicycle.

How to Install an Ebike Conversion Kit

To get started, you will need some standard tools.

You will need Philips, wrenches, flat screwdrivers, Allen wrenches, an air pump, and pliers. Every bike is different so you may need other tools as well.

A bike stand is also useful if you have one and remember to prepare a suitable spot to work on with lots of space.

If this seems too complicated (it’s not) then there are great preassembled electric bikes that are affordable. Read about the top 5 electric bikes here.

Remember that these are general instructions, always follow the instructions in the ebike conversion kit’s manual.

Installing a hub motor conversion kit;

Step one: Take off the wheel you are to replace. If it is the back wheel, you need to take off the chain as well. To install Pedal-Assist (voluntary), you need to take off the left pedal arm.

Step two: Take off the old tube and tire and put it on the new hub motor wheel (if the new wheel doesn’t have a tire on). Don’t forget to inflate it.

Step three: Install the new hub motor wheel on your bike. On a rear-wheel, you need to install the gear cassettes and/or disc-brake as well. Put the chain on the gear cassettes, try spinning the pedals and see if the rear wheel is spinning correctly.

Step four: Find a good spot to place your controller where all the cables from the battery, motor, brakes, and display can reach (shouldn’t be a problem). Mount the controller.

Step five: (Pedal-Assist is optional) Where the left pedal arm was you should see a lock-ring holding the pedal to the frame. Take that ring off and place the pedal-assist sensor there, put the lock-ring back. Put the pedal arm back and make sure you tighten it properly.

Step six: Install the battery mount, either on the rack (install the rack) or to the frame. You don’t need to put the battery on yet.

Step seven: Remove the handlebar grips, brake levers (release the tension on the brake wires first), and LCD (if you have one), let the gear-shifter stay in place. Slide on the new LCD-display first, then the new brake levers (connect the brake wires), the throttle and lastly the handlebar grips. Route the cables to the controller and connect them.

Step eight: Put the battery in the battery mount, connect all the cables to the controller according to the manual (they usually only fit in the right port).

Step nine: Test everything to make sure it works, and everything is fastened properly. Zip-tie all the cables neatly to the frame.

Step ten: Go out for a test ride and enjoy your new electric bike!

Installing a mid-drive conversion kit;

Installing a Bafang mid-drive ebike kit is a bit too complicated to write down a guide here. But with the manual, it is not that hard.

You can find the manual here and see the work you have ahead of you.

There are many reasons to build your electric bike using an ebike kit. The best electric bike conversion kits offer many advantages compared to buying a complete ebike.

Cheaper – As you already have the entire bike, you only have to buy the motor, battery, and controller. Everything you need is included in an ebike kit. Some times the battery is bought separately.
More variety to choose from – You have more and better options to modify your build in regards to power, range, and features.
Faster and stronger – You can quickly build a beast that outperforms almost all of the factory-made ebikes. Why not use the extra power if it’s available to you?
Fun – It is a fun experience building your very own electric bike. And as a result, you have something to be proud of that people will be interested in.
Probably, any bike works but some are more appropriate than others. The vital part as you evaluate your bike is the strength and durability of the frame and the front fork.

The stronger frame you have, the better, in high speeds you don’t want your frame or fork to break. The result can be disastrous, especially if you don’t wear a proper helmet.

A steel frame can be great, but it is also heavy if you have to carry your bike.

An aluminum frame is probably the most common one. It is both durable and rather lightweight. Make sure the frame feels robust and stable so that the front fork won’t break on a pothole at high speed.

A carbon frame is super lightweight but not that strong. If you have one, you need to make sure you get a suitable ebike kit. The best electric bike conversion kits are placed on the rear wheel or in the midsection of the bike. Choose your ebike kit with care, and you will have a great ebike.

Bamboo bike frames are an upcoming trend that is a lot stronger than you might think. They are both trendy and practical and you should consider them as a serious option.
An ebike kit sure can. There are two ways of looking at this question;

The first is if it is cheaper to motorize your bike than to buy a new electric bike. And yes it is and has been addressed earlier in this article.

The second way of looking at this question is if you can save money by getting an electric bike. And yes, again, and let me tell you why.

You save money on gas – By taking your electric bike instead of your car, you save up on gas and parking. Do the math and see how much you spend on your car on unnecessary trips that could be made with an ebike. It’s more then you think.

Better health – By living healthy and exercising, yes you do still get some exercise, you live longer and save money on future medical bills.
Maybe, it depends on the kid. It is up to you as a parent to judge how well your kid handles a responsibility like that. Various ebike kits that have different top speeds. So look around and find the best and most suitable electric bike conversion kit for your kid.
If you can read instructions (or follow an instructive YouTube clip), then yes. At the very least a rear or front-wheel ebike kit should be easy. They are straightforward to install. A mid-drive ebike kit, on the other hand, is a bit harder and require some bicycle experience to install.

The best electric bike conversion kits all come with instructions that are easy to follow. With a bit of patience, anyone can install an ebike kit.
Quite easy. Anyone should be able to do it in most cases.

Front-wheel ebike kit – Super easy

Rear-wheel ebike kit – Easy

Mid-drive ebike kit – Medium to Hard
Most ebike kits are water-resistant. It is an important distinction to make. Most ebike kits (maybe all?) handle rain without any issues but should not be lowered into the water completely. That wouldn’t be the best way to treat your electric bike conversion kit.
Your ebike kit should be just as powerful as you want it to be. Both a racehorse and a donkey can take you from point A to B. One is certainly more fun than the other though.

There are a few things to consider. Firstly you might want to see if ebikes are regulated by law in the area or state you live. Secondly, you should consider how fast you are comfortable riding. Are you satisfied riding at a steady pace, or are you a speedster who enjoys pushing the limits.

Lastly, it’s all about the money. The thing is that a powerful ebike kit isn’t that expensive. The difference between the ebike kits is very little in regards to the price tag. The difference in how fun they are is huge, so my suggestion is to go for it!
You can choose from a large variety of batteries for your ebike kit. Make sure that they are compatible. Make sure the voltage is appropriate. The compatible motor wattage is usually written on the battery’s product description.

Another helpful tool is to review the comments. Usually, the battery works with a greater variety of motor wattages than what is recommended in the product description. It is quite often that people advertise a usage that is entirely appropriate, however, still not approved by the manufacturer. This type of usage is, of course, at your own risk.

Many of the best electric bike conversion kits have motors above 1000w. The manufacturer typically recommends a 48 V battery, but when I took a closer look, I found out that many people have successfully used 52V batteries. A higher voltage gives your ebike kit more power.
With a hub motor ebike kit, it won’t take long, a couple of hours at most. If you are a little bit handy, I’m confident it can be done in under an hour.

The best electric bike conversion kits are the mid-drive ebike kits. They are, unfortunately, also the most difficult ebike kits to install. They are, on the other hand, definitely worth the extra money and time if you feel that you are competent enough to install them. Otherwise, I’m sure you can find a local bike shop that is willing to fix it for you, find one and consult them before you order though.
For your electric bike conversion kit, a standard bike toolset will be best. You will need Philips, Wrenches, Allen wrenches, Screwdrivers, Pliers and an Air-pump. Your best option is to buy a bike tool kit at Amazon if you don’t already have all the tools at your disposal. A proper toolset is great to have, but if you don’t feel like buying one, you can always ask around to see if a friend has the tools you are missing.

Another almost essential thing, in my opinion, is a bike stand. If you are trying to build an ebike with the best electric bike conversion kit, you deserve to be working at a comfortable height. It is a real burden on your back to work in an unnatural position. You shouldn’t be breaking your back when you can raise the bike to the proper height. Ergonomic working height is important!
The best electric bike conversion kits do not need servicing. Some of the first ebike kits to enter the market did. However, times change and technology has improved a lot over the years. Nowadays the electric bike kits are service-free.

The bicycle itself does need servicing though. You need to tune the brakes, check the air-pressure and lubricate the chain among other things. An electric unicycle does not need any service however, check them out, they are really cool.
Be careful when you are riding and try to keep your ebike kit clean. The battery is what you can give some extra love if you want to maximize the life span of your ebike kit and get as many charge cycles as possible from it.

Never fully drain the battery – A general rule is to try and keep your battery above 30% to prolong the life span of the battery cells.

Don’t leave your battery outside in freezing temperatures – Try and keep your battery at what you would feel is a comfortable temperature, not too cold nor too hot. The exact temperature range is often a debated question so I won’t claim I know the exact range. But do keep it above freezing and not too hot either.

    1. Absolutely, it is easiest with a rear wheel kit since the wireing is shorter but you can wire it along the frame in a neatly fashion without a doubt. So in short the answer is yes!

    1. Yeah sure, I cant see why that would be a problem. That bike has 27.5″ wheels though so make sure you get one with those measurements (most are 26″ kits). This one from Bafang offers a kit for 27.5″ tires,

  1. We are both 64 years old and the type of riding will be simple trails, rail to trail, Greenway’s, Federal Park trails, easy to very basic –moderate grades .
We are looking for Front wheel conversion kit including battery, brake cut off, the wheel and controller must be matched . Would prefer Front hub geared motor, this will allow free wheeling .
We both are riding Specialized bikes at this time. One is the Rockhopper and the other is a Hardrock. Both of them have 29″ x 2″ front Alexrims rims. Both have disc brakes , one with hydraulic the other mechanical. They have fast track tires HRD double walled.
You have any recommendations for such as set up?

    1. Hi! Ebikeling is great if you really want a front wheel conversion kit.

The thing is that you have really nice bikes, Specialized are high-performance bikes and it would be a shame to replace such a nice and expensive wheel. You should definitely consider a Bafang 1000-1500 w mid conversion kit instead. You won’t have to replace any wheels for a lesser quality wheel and you get better performance on top. Great bikes deserves the best electric motor to match. If it seems like too much of a hassle to install them you can always as a local bike shop to do it for a small fee. Good luck and please let me know which one you got.

  2. I have a Sportex South Slope with 26 X 2.125 wheels. It just has internal brakes. I am thinking about a front wheel conversion. I just will be riding on streets. What would be best.

    1. Just make sure you get the correct wheelsize for your motorized wheel. Any from my ranking of the best ebikekits will do fine 🙂
